Original US Treasury war bonds poster illustrated by Theodor Geisel, working as Dr. Seuss, and issued circa 1943. The Squander Bug was a British invention, created by Phillip Boydell for the National Savings Committee to shame wasteful spending; Geisel redrew the character entirely in his own idiom for the American campaign. He spent the war on propaganda, first as a political cartoonist for the New York daily PM and later in Frank Capra's signal corps unit at Fox.
