The poster was printed with a lacquer coating, which fractured during linen backing, leaving fine vertical cracking through the sheet. There is minor edge and corner wear, with scattered surface scuffs and abrasions. The cracking reads on close inspection and recedes at normal viewing distance. Once framed, the poster will present well.

Artist Stephen Frykholm was Herman Miller's first in-house graphic designer, hired in 1970, and produced a picnic poster nearly every year for around two decades, each taking a potluck food and enlarging it past the point of easy recognition. The series is held by the Museum of Modern Art and SFMOMA, and has been the subject of exhibitions at the Cranbrook Art Museum and the Grand Rapids Art Museum.
