This French government-commissioned wine promotion poster is a delightful art deco confection: a couple strolls arm in arm through an explosion of jewel-toned grape clusters in every variety, rendered in vivid gouache against a cream ground, the figures themselves left in elegant pencil-sketch white. The contrast between the painterly, almost psychedelic grapes and the spare draftsmanship of the figures is genuinely inspired.
The poster was printed by Devambez, one of the great Parisian lithographic houses, and published by the French Ministry of Agriculture as part of a national campaign to promote domestic wine consumption. A joyful, beautifully made poster that appeals equally to wine enthusiasts, French graphic art collectors, and art deco devotees.
